PHILADELPHIA · THE COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK

Fitler Square.

Fitler Square brings a small-park scale to western Center City. Its fountain, residential streets and access to Schuylkill River recreation create a different daily pattern from the busier shopping blocks around Rittenhouse to the east.

More than a name on the map.

The namesake square is an intimate starting point, while Schuylkill River Park supplies a larger landscape for recreation and dog walking. Farther west, the Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk puts a walking and cycling route over the water. Compare the experience around each green space: a pocket square, an active park and a shared river trail serve different needs.

THE EVERYDAY PICTURE

The streets. The rhythm. The practical details.

Architecture & atmosphere

Rowhouse streets surround the compact square, with changes in scale toward the river. Stoops, planted edges and short blocks reward close attention to entrances, light and how outdoor space is shared.

Getting around

Walking and cycling connect the square with the river parks. Locate the relevant trail entrance first; the riverfront path and neighborhood streets have distinct access points.

Make your visit count

Try a loop from the square to the river and back through the residential blocks. Notice the difference between a park-facing home and one beside a trail approach. On the boardwalk, pause at an overlook without blocking people continuing along the path.

A QUESTION TO BRING WITH YOU
